Abstract
This article focuses on research from Oklahoma State University examining how receiver psychology—encompassing sensory, perceptual, and cognitive traits—influences the structure of animal communication networks. The study highlights that variation in how receivers process social signals affects individual social positions and overall network dynamics, with implications for ecological and evolutionary processes. Despite advances in social network analysis, the research notes a lack of studies explicitly addressing receiver psychology’s role in communication networks and suggests new methodologies to explore this area. Funded by the National Science Foundation, the peer-reviewed work emphasizes the reciprocal relationship between receiver psychology and social structure in shaping communication and sociality.
