Abstract
The article focuses on how leaders can become more adaptable in challenging and high-pressure situations by practicing "Deliberate Calm," a form of self-mastery that involves consciously choosing calm, intentional responses rather than defaulting to ineffective habitual reactions. It illustrates this concept through a hypothetical example of a sales director facing market disruptions, emphasizing the need to acknowledge uncertainty, invite new ideas, and foster psychological safety to promote innovation. The article identifies three key skills to develop adaptability: learning agility, emotional self-regulation, and dual awareness, which together help leaders respond effectively to novel challenges. Evidence from a leadership program in a global pharmaceutical company suggests that practicing Deliberate Calm significantly improves leadership performance, adaptability, collaboration, and well-being.
