Abstract

This article examines how physical work environments influence employees’ professional identities, performance, and well-being by integrating research from environmental psychology, organizational behavior, and workplace design. It outlines four key workplace elements—functional, sensory, social, and temporal—that shape how individuals experience and connect with their workspaces. The authors propose a three-step approach for workers to intentionally shape their workplaces through auditing current environments, evaluating the personal meaning of place elements, and taking action to personalize, alter, or set boundaries within their workspaces. The article emphasizes that thoughtfully designed or adapted workplaces can support identity motives such as belonging, growth, and continuity, thereby enabling individuals to thrive professionally and personally.
