Abstract
This article focuses on research from the European University of Madrid examining the emotional and social impact of early gestational loss, defined as pregnancy loss before 22 weeks. The study, using interpretative phenomenological analysis of interviews with 17 Spanish women, found that miscarriage is often experienced as the death of a child, leading to disenfranchised grief characterized by intense emotions such as sadness, guilt, and anxiety, as well as symptoms resembling post-traumatic stress. The research highlights the social minimization of this loss and the importance of empathetic care and peer support in facilitating grieving. It concludes that midwives play a crucial role in recognizing and validating this grief, emphasizing the need for humanized healthcare models that provide emotional and psychological support from early pregnancy stages.
