Abstract

This article focuses on the risk of treatment-requiring postpartum depression (PPD) among mothers with multiple sclerosis (MS) compared to mothers without MS, based on a nationwide Danish cohort study from 1997 to 2023. Using redeemed prescriptions for antidepressants within 12 months postpartum as a proxy for PPD, the study found that women with MS had nearly twice the adjusted odds (aOR 1.9, 95% CI: 1.6–2.3) of requiring treatment for PPD compared to women without MS. Sensitivity analyses incorporating depression diagnoses and excluding antidepressants used for neuropathic pain confirmed the elevated risk. The findings suggest that mothers with MS represent a vulnerable group warranting enhanced perinatal mental health monitoring and tailored support.
