Abstract

This article focuses on Dr. Antonia Novello, the first woman and first Latina to serve as U.S. Surgeon General, highlighting her lifelong commitment to addressing health inequities affecting vulnerable populations such as women, children, and minorities. Drawing from her personal experiences with chronic illness and inspired by her mother’s example, Novello pursued a medical and public health career dedicated to combating issues like HIV/AIDS stigma, poverty, and access to care. Throughout her tenure and beyond, she emphasized evidence-based public health policies and advocated for equity amid systemic challenges exacerbated by crises like COVID-19. Guided by the Hippocratic Oath, Novello continues to champion the health and rights of marginalized communities through various leadership and volunteer roles.
