Abstract
This article reviews Douglas Petrovich's book *Origins of the Hebrews: New Evidence of Israelites in Egypt from Joseph to the Exodus*, which presents archaeological evidence supporting the biblical account of the Israelites' sojourn and exodus from Egypt. Petrovich, an expert in Syro-Palestinian archaeology and ancient Egyptian language, argues that many discoveries—such as Canaanite-style buildings in Goshen (Avaris), large grain silos, and changes in Egyptian political and religious structures—align with the biblical narrative when Egyptian chronology is adjusted to the reign of Sesostris III rather than Rameses. The book addresses common scholarly objections and interprets circumstantial evidence that corresponds closely with biblical events, including the Passover and the departure of the Israelites. While acknowledging minor errors in the first edition, the review highlights the book's detailed and comprehensive case for the historicity of the biblical Exodus.
