Abstract

The article recounts the first British schoolmasters' cruise across Greece in 1901, organized for Classics teachers to explore ancient sites and enhance their teaching methods. The steam yacht Argonaut embarked from Marseilles, carrying notable educators and medical professionals, including Dr. Richard Caton, who documented the journey. The cruise aimed to improve the understanding of ancient Greek culture, which was often poorly taught, and it included visits to significant archaeological sites like Delphi and Mycenae. The voyage ultimately inspired future educational trips and contributed to the establishment of the Hellenic Travellers Club, which evolved into Swan Hellenic, a continuing cruise operation.
