Abstract
The article examines the tension between the scientific view of a deterministic, particle-based universe and the lived experience of a richly meaningful, qualitative world. It critiques the reductionist perspective exemplified by Laplace’s demon and contemporary thinkers who see all phenomena as governed solely by unbreakable physical laws, arguing that this view overlooks the expressive, meaningful character inherent in nature and human experience. The author suggests that physical lawfulness and meaningful expression coexist harmoniously, as illustrated by human speech and natural phenomena, and that the world’s qualitative presence is fundamental to its reality. Ultimately, the article calls for a science that embraces both quantitative lawfulness and the qualitative, meaningful aspects of the world, proposing that meaning governs lawfulness rather than being negated by it.
