Abstract

This article examines how Rita Felski's four uses of literature—recognition, enchantment, knowledge, and shock—can enrich modern Christian engagement with the Old Testament. It draws parallels between Felski's critique of ideological criticism and aestheticism and common Bible reading approaches, identifying historical-critical methods and superficial devotional reading as analogous limitations. The article argues that Felski's four reading strategies offer a broader hermeneutical toolkit that encourages self-reflection, immersive enjoyment, theological insight, and moral challenge through Scripture. These approaches aim to deepen personal and communal encounters with the Bible beyond purely academic or devotional frameworks.
