Abstract
"The Ethics of Staying: Social Movements and Land Rights Politics in Pakistan" is an ethnographic study by Mubbashir A. Rizvi that examines a peasant land rights movement in Okara, Pakistan from 2000 to 2012. Rizvi analyzes the movement through various theoretical frameworks, exploring the complexity and diversity of studying a social movement in a region with a history of colonial interventions. The book focuses on the moral claim to land made by the movement, emphasizing the peasants' relationship with the land and their history of laboring and cultivating it. The author also discusses the impact of colonial infrastructures and the intermingling of colonial modernity with local customs and traditions. The book highlights the resistance against the displacement of local production methods and the control of multinational companies over local products. It also addresses the role of NGOs and internal conflicts within the movement. While the study offers valuable insights, it primarily relies on interviews with movement leaders, overlooking the perspectives of grassroots workers, and does not thoroughly explore women's mobilization and experiences within the movement.
