Abstract

10 Kawakami argues about Adam Smith's laissez-faire and determinism in I Yuibutsushikan Kenkyuu i , in exploring whether historical materialism is based on determinism or not. Because Marx had focused on Ferguson's argument of the division of labour and his pessimistic view of commercial society, Marxists tried to find proto-socialism or proto-alienation theory in Ferguson's thoughts. Kawakami's translation of Gunter's article: Don Sadi Gunter (1921) translated by Hajime Kawakami 'Yuibutsushikan to Ingaritsu to Seishinseikatsu [Historical materialism, causality, and spiritual life]', in [1] I Yuibustushikan Kenkyuu [Study of the historical materialism] i , Koubundou Shobou, pp. 257-73.
