Abstract

This article explores the possibility that Thomas, the biblical disciple known for doubting Jesus' resurrection, might have been autistic, using this perspective to reconsider traditional interpretations of his story. It draws on characteristics of autism as defined by the National Autistic Society, such as challenges with communication, social interaction, and sensory processing, and applies these to Thomas's responses in the Gospel of John. The article suggests that rather than viewing Thomas as a problematic doubter needing discipline, Jesus's interaction with him can be seen as supportive and affirming of his neurodiversity. This reframing invites reflection on how churches and communities understand and accommodate neurodivergent individuals, advocating for greater awareness and inclusion.
