Abstract

This article reviews the Garber-Hanson Haggadah, an annotated edition of the Passover Seder text notable for its English translations, original commentaries, and a series of 17 expert essays on diverse topics related to the Seder and Jewish traditions. Unlike most annotated Haggadot, which are primarily in Hebrew, this volume offers accessible English annotations and explores themes such as the Seder's relation to the Eucharist, various Jewish cultural traditions, and contemporary practices during the COVID-19 pandemic. The review highlights the editors' nuanced treatment of traditional texts, including the midrash of the four children and the "Four Questions," while critiquing some outdated gender role descriptions in the volume's discussion of the Seder table. The work is recommended for those hosting or attending a Seder and for readers seeking a deeper understanding of the Haggadah across diverse Jewish and interfaith contexts.
