Abstract

Renewed fighting in Niger has led to an increase in jihadist attacks following a coup in July. In one attack, suspected jihadists targeted soldiers in western Niger, killing 29 soldiers and injuring two others. The Tillaberi region, where the attack took place, is a known hideout for jihadists affiliated with Al-Qaeda and the Islamic State group. Additionally, France has begun withdrawing its troops from Niger, with 1,500 soldiers set to leave by December 31st. The United Nations coordinator has also been expelled from the country, and the United States has cut off over $500 million in assistance to Niger. [Extracted from the article]
