Abstract

In July 1944, several significant events took place during World War II. The Axis powers introduced the heavy Tiger II tank and the rocket-powered fighter Messerschmitt Me 163 Komet, while the Allies deployed the Gloster Meteor, their only operational jet aircraft. The Anglo-Canadian forces launched Operation Charnwood, an offensive aimed at capturing Caen, which resulted in the Allies taking control of the city. On July 20, a coup d'etat was attempted against the Nazi regime, with an assassination attempt on Hitler, but it ultimately failed. The Red Army liberated Majdanek, the first Nazi concentration camp to be freed, and the US forces successfully secured Noemfoor Island in Dutch New Guinea. [Extracted from the article]
