Abstract

The article focuses on Exodus 23:12 and its unique emphasis on centering the vulnerable in Sabbath observance. It proposes three homiletical approaches for preachers: highlighting how the verse prioritizes the rest of laborers such as oxen, slaves, and resident aliens; acknowledging that Sabbath rest has historically been a privilege not accessible to all, including enslaved Christians; and rethinking Sabbath as not only a day of rest but also a call to ensure ongoing provision for the vulnerable. The discussion situates this verse in conversation with other biblical texts to advocate for a more just and inclusive understanding of Sabbath observance.
