Abstract

The article examines the 19th-century Javanese literary masterpiece *Serat Centhini*, focusing on its unusual inclusion of Christian descriptions of Jesus—as the Son of God, the Word of God, and the Spirit of God who died and was resurrected—within a predominantly Islamic and indigenous Javanese spiritual context. Through literary and contextual analysis, the study reveals that *Serat Centhini* employs apophatic (negative) theology and a cultural openness that embraces diverse spiritual expressions, reflecting Javanese spirituality’s emphasis on humility, mystery, and the limitations of human language in describing the Divine. The text illustrates a syncretic or integrative approach rather than strict theological conformity, allowing for the coexistence of Islamic monotheism, Christian Christology, and indigenous beliefs as part of a broader mystical journey toward union with God. This perspective encourages interreligious openness and dialogue, suggesting that adherents of different faiths can learn from one another while maintaining their core beliefs.
