Abstract
The article focuses on the reprinting of John M. Steadman's essay, "The Idea of Satan as the Hero of Paradise Lost," which originally appeared in 1976 and is noted for its comprehensive analysis of Satan's character in Milton's epic poem. The essay argues that Milton's portrayal of Satan challenges traditional notions of heroism by presenting a complex figure whose qualities are both admirable and morally ambiguous. Steadman situates his discussion within a long-standing scholarly debate regarding Satan's role, acknowledging various critical perspectives while providing a detailed examination of Satan's narrative arc throughout the poem. This reprint is part of a new column aimed at highlighting significant essays from the journal's archives, with Steadman's work being the most downloaded piece. [Extracted from the article]
