Abstract

The article compares Ubuntu's restorative justice, rooted in Southern African philosophy, with Vedanta's karmic justice from Indian philosophy, highlighting their complementary approaches to justice beyond punitive systems. Ubuntu emphasizes community healing, reconciliation, and reintegration of offenders to restore social harmony, as exemplified by South Africa's Truth and Reconciliation Commission. Vedanta focuses on individual moral responsibility and spiritual evolution governed by the law of Karma and Dharma, where justice unfolds over multiple lifetimes aiming at liberation (Moksha). The article suggests integrating these models could enrich modern justice systems by combining social restoration with ethical and spiritual accountability, offering a more holistic and compassionate framework for justice and rehabilitation.
