Abstract
The article focuses on a strategic framework for organizations to effectively deploy generative AI (gen AI) by evaluating tasks based on two factors: the cost of errors and the type of knowledge required (explicit data versus tacit knowledge). It categorizes tasks into four quadrants—no regrets, creative catalyst, human-first, and quality control—guiding leaders on where gen AI can operate autonomously, augment creativity, assist human judgment, or require human oversight. The authors emphasize that competitive advantage arises not from speed alone but from distinctive, strategic use of gen AI combined with proprietary data and organizational redesign. They caution against waiting for perfect AI and advocate broad access, experimentation, and alignment of people, processes, and data to unlock near-term value and sustainable differentiation.
