Abstract

This article examines how Christian schools in Western societies can adapt their educational mission amid rapid cultural change characterized by pluralism, fragmentation, and secularization. It highlights the challenges these schools face in preparing students for responsible citizenship and social cohesion while maintaining their Christian identity. Using Driestar Christian University in the Netherlands as a case study, the research finds that teacher candidates feel competent to work in Reformed Christian settings but less so in more diverse or secular environments. The article advocates for integrating the Whole Child Development (WCD) approach—a holistic educational model addressing cognitive, social, emotional, physical, moral, and spiritual dimensions—into Christian pedagogy to better equip teachers for diverse classrooms. It concludes that WCD aligns fundamentally with Christian education but should be enriched by a Christian focus on serving God, enabling Christian schools to remain both safe and responsive within changing sociocultural contexts.
