Abstract

This article focuses on new psychological research exploring the role of compassion in conflict resolution. The study, supported by the National Institute on Drug Abuse and the Research Foundation for the State University of New York, examines how compassion's relevance depends on whether conflicts are perceived as zero-sum competitions or non-zero-sum interactions, such as those modeled by the reiterated prisoner's dilemma (rPD). It highlights a framework linking rPD, dyadic active inference, and Mahayana Buddhism, proposing that intuitive compassion can transform conflicts into lasting peace by overcoming limiting mindsets that reduce complex realities to one-dimensional views. The research suggests that compassion is a commitment to strategies that yield optimal outcomes for all parties, rather than a balance between self-interest and altruism.
