Abstract

The article presents the discussion on struggle of the Cherokee people to protect the sacred site of Chota from being submerged by a dam project, highlighting how the legal system's understanding of religious freedom did not align with their spiritual beliefs. Topics include the legal battle against the dam construction, the challenge of translating Native spiritual concepts into terms recognizable by Western jurisprudence; and court rulings on the protection of sacred sites.
