Abstract

In none of the cases did the church have any independence to provide the degree of influence over the state that neo-integralists favor; the clergy either cheered the regime on or remained silent, except in a few heroic cases. Finally, neo-integralists openly admire authoritarian regimes - including those in Iran, China, and Russia - that they regard as superior to America in crucial respects, and they embrace as well leaders of European parties with historical ties to fascism and contemporary ties to Russia's government. FEATURES SINCE the publication of Patrick Deneen's Why Liberalism Failed in 2018, a small but growing number of religious conservatives have been reevaluating the place of classical liberalism in America's political culture. Neo-integralists hold that all political conflict is ultimately theological, so that no neutral ground exists on which questions about the status of Jews in a neo-integralist state can be answered.
