Abstract

The letter addresses the meaning and demands of Ash Wednesday, contrasting contemporary interpretations with its early Christian origins. It highlights that historically, Ash Wednesday involved severe penitential practices such as fasting, public humiliation, and exclusion, rooted in Greco-Roman concepts of honor and shame. The letter questions whether modern attitudes toward shame and guilt have diminished the sacrament of confession and suggests that Ash Wednesday calls for humility and recognition of human transience. It also recalls the example of Roman emperor Theodosius the Great's public repentance as a profound act of contrition and restoration.
