Abstract

This article surveys the contributions of Black scholars to the study of the Hebrew Bible/Old Testament, focusing specifically on their diverse interpretations of the book of Exodus. It highlights how Black scholars employ various methods—including textual criticism, African and African American contextual readings, gender analysis through womanist perspectives, liberation theology, and integrative sociocultural approaches—to offer insights that challenge dominant Eurocentric academic paradigms. The article emphasizes the importance of recognizing these perspectives to enrich biblical scholarship and better address contemporary issues faced by faith communities, particularly those connected to African and African American experiences.
