Abstract
This article examines the crucial but often overlooked roles of enslaved and marginalized individuals who assisted Jesus' disciples and early Christian leaders in composing, copying, and disseminating the New Testament and spreading Christianity. It highlights how secretaries, scribes, couriers, and readers—many of whom were enslaved—contributed creatively and interpretively to the texts and their transmission, shaping Christian theology and practice. The article emphasizes that the success of early Christianity depended not only on its freeborn apostles but also on these invisible collaborators whose labor and agency have been historically obscured. This perspective invites a reevaluation of the social dynamics behind the formation and spread of Christian scripture and communities.
