Ethical Considerations of Using AI in Writing Pedagogy.

Abstract

This article examines ethical and practical issues in writing pedagogy with artificial intelligence (AI) integration. It emphasizes the importance of critical thinking while utilizing AI technologies like ChatGPT, stressing information accuracy issues and educators' and students' responsibilities to fact-check and further understand AI-generated content. AI can support writing and research processes. This paper warns that it may contribute to higher education inequity unless strategic pedagogical strategies are in place. Critical thinking and social justice are stressed in this article by comparing first-year writing (FYW) course goals to sociology education by suggesting that AI could improve these educational goals by giving new writing and research methods. This pedagogical tool also requires transparency in AI use and urges educators to help students critically evaluate AI outputs. A mini assignment on utilizing AI for research shows mixed outcomes and emphasizes the need to prepare students to utilize AI strategically and successfully. Reflective practices and counter-storytelling can help educators use AI to construct linguistically inclusive and socially just learning environments. Students should be able to navigate and influence AI in a way that aligns with their beliefs, creating a more ethical and inclusive digital future. It concludes by offering equitable, intentional, and practical ways to incorporate AI into the classroom to teach students how to critically use generative AI technologies. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
