Abstract
Several systemic problems in Orthodox Christianity were revealed by the Ukrainian crisis (the reaction to Constantinople's granting of autocephaly to the Orthodox Church of Ukraine, followed by Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine). They included autocephaly, synodality, and the relationship between Church and state. This article examines these problems in the context of factors that historically contributed to "unity in plurality." It then proposes ways forward, including rethinking the territorial principle, broadening councils to include a wider participation of clergy, laymen, and laywomen, and accepting pluralism as an ascetic endeavor.
