Abstract
The article discusses the views of Thomas Hobbes, a 17th-century philosopher, on the state of nature and the potential for human beings to create a peaceful and prosperous society. Hobbes believed that without a common power to keep them in check, humans would fall into a state of anarchical warfare and lawlessness. However, he also believed that through reason and a social contract, humans could establish a ruler or assembly that would maintain peace and protect their well-being. The article also explores how Hobbes' insights can be applied to contemporary issues, such as regime change, the expansion of government power, and the prioritization of safety over liberty. It concludes by acknowledging the limitations of Hobbes' optimism and the inherent conflict between human beings' need for meaning and their propensity for conflict. [Extracted from the article]
