Abstract

The article reviews recent early music vocal recordings, highlighting five distinct vocal consorts and a larger choral project. Capella de Ministrers performs 14th- and 15th-century Spanish plainchant and polyphony from the Royal Convent of Sixena with clarity and faith-infused intensity. Two mixed-voice groups, Magnificat and Cut Circle, launch series focusing on Orlandus Lassus and Josquin, respectively, offering both sacred and secular works with varied vocal styles and historical pronunciations. Male consorts The Gesualdo Six and Cinquecento present Renaissance sacred music, including parody Mass settings by Annibale Padovano, noted for smooth singing and detailed polyphony. Finally, the Choir of Girton College, Cambridge, with The Western Wyndes brass ensemble, records Marc'Antonio Ingegneri's Mass and motets for Holy Week and Easter, blending ceremonial grandeur with contemplative moods.
