Abstract

The article explores the history of African American physicians and challenges related to gaining medical education and postgraduate training. It discusses the study "An American Health Dilemma" by W. Michael Byrd and Linda A. Clayton describing the early African American physicians, the discrimination and frustration they experienced and their efforts to address racism and provide medical care to the needy of all races. It also describes the growth of the African American medical profession.
