Abstract

The article focuses on Amey Victoria Adkins-Jones's perspective that Mary, the mother of Jesus, was a Black woman from the ancient Near East, as presented in her book "Immaculate Misconceptions: A Black Mariology." Adkins-Jones, an ordained Baptist minister and assistant professor at Emory's Candler School of Theology, argues that traditional depictions of Mary as white erase her Jewish identity and contribute to societal issues surrounding race and gender. Her work highlights the significance of Black Madonnas and aims to inspire social change by addressing the conditions faced by Black mothers today. The article also notes that Adkins-Jones is the first Black woman to earn a PhD in Christian theological studies from Duke University. [Extracted from the article]
