Abstract

The article examines the papacy’s delayed response to King Henry VIII’s break with Rome, focusing on Pope Paul III’s eventual excommunication of Henry in 1538. It argues that the papacy’s prolonged hesitation—marked by repeated threats but postponed enforcement of excommunication—undermined its authority and may have accelerated England’s separation from the Roman Catholic Church. Political complexities involving European powers Spain and France contributed to the papacy’s indecision, while Henry’s consolidation of religious and temporal power in England rendered later papal sanctions ineffective. The article suggests that earlier, decisive papal action might have curtailed Henry’s reforms and altered the course of English religious history.
