Abstract
This article examines the overlap between congregational leaders and chaplains in the contemporary United States, using data from the National Survey of Religious Leaders (NSRL) collected in 2019–2020. It finds that 17.1% of primary congregational leaders also serve as chaplains, working part-time across diverse settings such as hospitals, police and fire departments, prisons, and educational institutions. Catholic and Hispanic primary leaders are significantly more likely than their peers to hold chaplain roles, with chaplaincy involving an average commitment of about seven hours per week. The study highlights the distinct but occasionally overlapping nature of these professions and suggests that theological educators consider the specific training needs of clergy who serve in both capacities.
