Abstract

The article focuses on the surprising spread of the cult of St Oswald of Northumbria across the Alpine regions of the German-speaking world, far beyond his early-medieval English origins. Topics include the shaping of Oswald's saintly image through Bede's writings, the role of Anglo-German aristocratic alliances in transmitting his relics and prestige to the Continent, and the later monastic enthusiasm that transformed his veneration into a widespread and enduring devotional tradition.
