Abstract

A recent systematic review conducted by investigators at La Trobe University in Melbourne, Australia, focused on identity management strategies for religious individuals who are sexually and gender diverse. The review highlighted five main strategies adopted by individuals to navigate the perceived conflict between their religious and SGM identities: identity conflict, rejecting religion, rejecting sexuality, compartmentalization, and identity integration. The study found that identity integration and rejecting religion were associated with psychosocial benefits, while identity conflict, rejecting sexuality, and compartmentalization were risk factors for poorer health outcomes. The research concluded that reconciliation of religious and SGM identities is not only possible but also common, with protective benefits. [Extracted from the article]
