Abstract
This article focuses on the second and third visions of the prophet Zechariah, which address the future of Jerusalem and Joshua ben Jozadak, the high priest, in the context of post-exilic restoration. In the second vision, a divine aide instructs a surveyor to pause rebuilding Jerusalem’s walls, emphasizing that God’s protection and the city’s population growth will surpass physical defenses. The third vision depicts a heavenly court where Joshua, despite being symbolically "stained" by exile or communal waywardness, is vindicated and restored by Yahweh, who removes his guilt and reinstates him with priestly garments. These visions suggest that God’s work with Jerusalem, the Jewish people, and the church—including the Church of England amid crisis—is ongoing, requiring both divine grace and human responsibility. The article also reflects on the implications of divine forgiveness and restoration for contemporary church leadership and communal renewal.
