Abstract
This article reviews a book focused on the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee (SNCC), a key grassroots organization of young African American students in the Civil Rights Movement. The book expands scholarship by highlighting the often-overlooked creative writings—such as fiction and poetry—produced by SNCC members, beyond their well-studied memoirs and political essays. It analyzes various literary works connected to SNCC, including unpublished novels, folklore, field reports, and ties to the Black Arts Movement and Pan-Africanism. While the book broadens understanding of SNCC’s cultural contributions, it is noted to lack a unified critical framework centered specifically on SNCC members themselves.
