Abstract

The article focuses on Catherine Infante's monograph *The Arts of Encounter: Christians, Muslims, and the Power of Images in Early Modern Spain*, which examines the role of religious iconography in Christian-Muslim relations during early modern Iberia. Infante explores how images mediated intercultural encounters, identity, conversion, and mobility, challenging simplistic binaries about Morisco attitudes toward religious symbols. The book analyzes diverse sources—including literature, religious treatises, and visual culture—and highlights the fluid meanings of sacred images across cultural and geopolitical borders, with particular attention to Cervantes's works. This study contributes to a nuanced understanding of interfaith dynamics and the complex interplay of art, religion, and politics in the Spanish Mediterranean context.
