Abstract

The article reviews *Where Misfits Fit: Counterculture and Influence in the Ozarks*, which examines the Ozark region's unique cultural dynamics, highlighting its role as a "liminal" space where conservative long-term residents coexist with various non-mainstream groups such as back-to-the-landers, new-age enthusiasts, and religious cults. The author explores how regional identity, folklore, and imagined myths shape community values, emphasizing face-to-face interactions and a live-and-let-live attitude among residents. The book also discusses the influence of countercultural music groups and the back-to-the-land movement, as well as paranormal and spiritual themes centered in towns like Eureka Springs. This work offers sociological insights into regional identity and marginalized populations, making it a useful resource for students and researchers interested in cultural studies and social dynamics in the Ozarks.
