Abstract

The Antonescu regime systematically persecuted Christian religious minorities, compelling many to abandon their faith and (re)join the Romanian Orthodox Church to avoid arrest, imprisonment, or deportation to Transnistria. This campaign, supported by the Romanian Orthodox Church, aligned with the regime's ultranationalist objective of population homogenization. While recent scholarship has begun to address the experiences of religious minorities under Antonescu, a localized and comparative approach remains to be made. This article examines the regime's actions against Baptists and Molokans in Cetatea Albă, southern Bessarabia, using newly available archival sources to illustrate efforts to eliminate these groups and their resistance under duress. The regime's homogenization efforts were particularly aggressive in border regions, where religious and ethnic diversity posed a challenge to its ideological vision. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
