Abstract

This article reviews Mark Glouberman's *Persons and Other Things: Exploring the Philosophy of the Hebrew Bible*, which presents five interconnected theses positioning the Hebrew Bible primarily as a work of philosophy with a distinctive ontological claim about the essential particularity of persons, contrasting it with Greek philosophy and paganism. Glouberman argues that this claim is rooted in the second chapter of Genesis, challenging the first chapter's pagan creation account, and explores implications for topics such as the Holocaust, nature, and halakha. The book is noted for its unique and playful style, featuring frequent wordplay and humor, which some readers may find distracting from the philosophical arguments. Overall, the work offers an original philosophical perspective on the Hebrew Bible, combining rigorous scholarship with a distinctive literary approach.
