Abstract

The ancient city of Lixus in northern Morocco, believed to be the site of the Garden of the Hesperides, was originally settled by Phoenicians in the eighth century B.C. It later became a prosperous port city under the Kingdom of Mauretania and then as a Roman colony. Lixus was known for its production of garum, a fish sauce, and had the largest basins for its production in the western Mediterranean. Only a small portion of the site has been excavated, but new excavations are currently underway. Visitors to Lixus can explore Roman-period structures such as an amphitheater and a bath facility, as well as residential neighborhoods with mythologically themed mosaics. Nearby attractions include the modern city of Larache, beaches, and other ancient Roman cities. [Extracted from the article]
