Abstract

The article focuses on the life and missionary work of Fray Joseph Hortes de Belazco, a Franciscan missionary active in northern New Spain during the 18th century. Born in the late 1690s, he rose within the Franciscan Order and was tasked with documenting his travels and the geography of the region in a report written in 1737. The text also provides historical context about the Franciscan Order, particularly the Observant branch to which Hortes de Belazco belonged, and discusses the challenges and dynamics of missionary work among Native American populations in Texas and New Mexico. His account highlights the distances traveled, the cultural interactions with Indigenous peoples, and the internal conflicts within the Franciscan community regarding adherence to their founding principles.
