Abstract

This article examines the intertextual relationships among Plato’s *Laws*, the Stoic philosopher Musonius Rufus, and Clement of Alexandria’s *Paedagogus*, focusing on their shared engagement with practical ethics topics such as sexual morality and frugality. It argues that while Clement’s *Paedagogus* contains many direct quotations and paraphrases of Plato’s *Laws*, some of these references were likely mediated by Musonius Rufus, who himself incorporated Platonic ideas—especially from the *Laws*—within a Stoic ethical framework without explicitly naming Plato. The study highlights how Musonius’ views on sexual morality, emphasizing shame and natural procreation, closely parallel Platonic positions and were transmitted, with Christian adaptations, into Clement’s work. It further suggests that this reflects a broader tradition within Stoicism, particularly among later Stoics like Panaetius, of appropriating Plato’s *Laws* for practical ethical instruction, illustrating a complex, dynamic process of philosophical transmission and adaptation in the first and second centuries CE.
