Abstract
A recent report from Saint Tikhon's Orthodox University discusses the history of self-immolations among Old Believers from the second half of the 17th to the 20th centuries. The monograph by Maxim Viktorovich Pulkin explores the formation of the ritual suicide ideology, provides examples of notable self-immolations, and examines the responses of the state, the Church, and the Old Believers themselves. The research also considers the perception of self-immolations among the people, the attitudes of believers towards suicides during their faith, and the justifications and criticisms put forth by supporters and opponents.
