Abstract
A study conducted by researchers at the University of the Philippines Diliman explores the predictors of homonegativity in Southeast Asian countries. The study used data from the World Values Survey and found that values such as equality, choice, and agnosticism were consistent predictors of lower levels of homonegative attitudes, while relativism and older age were associated with higher levels of homonegativity. The research suggests that while there may be some common cultural predictors of lower levels of homonegativity in Southeast Asia, there is no uniform values system that constitutes sexual prejudice in the region. The findings highlight the need for contextually-sensitive and culturally-informed interventions to address negative attitudes towards lesbian women and gay men in different countries.
