Abstract

The article examines the resurgence and public visibility of far-right commemorative rituals in Italy under Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, focusing on ceremonies honoring fascist martyrs such as Sergio Ramelli. These rituals, rooted in the Italian Social Movement (MSI)—a postwar party aiming to preserve fascist legacy—employ a language of martyrdom to sustain far-right identity and victimhood narratives. The piece highlights how contemporary far-right groups and political figures connected to Meloni's Brothers of Italy party continue to engage with this culture of remembrance, which includes annual marches, fascist salutes, and memorial ceremonies at sites like the Verano cemetery's Chapel of the Fascist Martyrs. The article situates these practices within Italy's incomplete process of de-fascistisation and the enduring symbolic power of fascist memory in public spaces.
